City of Martensdale History
The City of Martensdale was founded in 1913 by John F. Martens and Walter H. Beam. Our town is 20 miles southwest of the state capital at the junction of Highways 28 and 92, and 10 miles from the Warren County courthouse
in Indianola.
The City lay between three (3) railroads: the Des Moines Osceola Southern (which became Burlington), Rock Island, and the Great Western; running as many as 30 trains per day. The last train service was in 1986.
In 1920, four country schools were combined into Martensdale Consolidated Schools, and in 1958 were further combined into Martensdale-St. Marys, Home of the Blue Devils.
The Great Western Bike Trail runs from southwest Des Moines in Polk County to Martensdale in Warren County. The Great Western Trail is a popular rail trail route that runs 17 miles from a suburban setting in Des Moines, into some of Iowa's classic rural landscape of rolling hills, small fields and farms, and wooded river valleys.
The Martensdale Volunteer Fire Dept. was founded in 1960 and continues to serve our community.
The Lions supports vision and hearing for families of the Martensdale area. The Martensdale Lions Hall serves and distributes Meals on Wheels for this area.
